La Galería Rebelde participated for the second consecutive year in the prestigious international art fair Art Paris. For this 2022 edition the gallery presents a selection of contemporary Guatemalan artists whose works create an homage to nature and sacredness. For this edition, the gallery presents the works of Sandra Monterroso, Angélica Serech, Clara de Tezanos and Andrés Asturias, working with different mediums such as painting, photographs, digital art and textile works following the mayan tradition of weaving.
Angélica Serech is a textile artist originally from San Juan Comalapa, Guatemala. Her work reinvents the tradition of her Mayan kaqchikel heritage to propose textiles that introduce new colors and techniques to the textile tradition of Comalapa. Talking about the mayan traditions is also Sandra Monterroso. For this show, Monterroso presents works in blue, a color obtained using ancient dyeing techniques with indigo, a natural pigment used in the mayan tradition, connecting a color with its history.
Andrés Asturias contributes to this conversation, creating an altar using contemporary still lifes of flowers. The composition is part of the series “Noche de Mediodía”, a staging of altars, offerings, affections and nostalgias worked behind the scenes. Finally, Clara de Tezanos presents three NFTs from the series "La fuente es el Sol". These pieces are videos of small sculptures being activated with the sun, creating for the photographic lense a sparkle only visible in video.
For this edition of Art Paris, La Galería Rebelde featured the work of four contemporary artists from Guatemala, using different mediums to explore different approaches to nature, and art production itself.
