Mónica Serra
Guatemala
Mónica Serra (Ciudad de Guatemala, 1966) She began studying painting at a very young age; however, it was not until university that a professor encouraged her to pursue Fine Arts, recognizing her innate talent. She earned a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts in 1988 from Syracuse University, New York. She furthered her studies in Florence, Italy, where she specialized in painting, and in Morocco, where she studied drawing.
Her practice includes ceramics, printmaking, oil painting, acrylics, and watercolor. She has exhibited her work extensively in Guatemala, including at Galería El Túnel, Galería El Attico, and the National Museum of Modern Art, among others, as well as internationally in countries such as the United States and Japan.
Serra’s technique emerged by accident when she sprayed water over a layered painting, intending to remove some of the paint. It was at that moment she discovered what would become her signature style—one she describes as romantic and landscape-oriented, in which she not only paints but also "unpaints."
